Über das Festival

Das Zeitzeug_Festival für performative Künste wird seit 2011 als Initiative von Studierenden der Theaterwissenschaft, der Szenischen Forschung sowie Künstler*innen aus NRW organisiert. Es fördert einen interdisziplinären Austausch zwischen Kunstschaffenden an der Schwelle zur Professionalität. Dieses Jahr tritt das Zeitzeug(chen) anstelle des bisherigen Festivals, um Aufmerksamkeit auf das Zeitzeug_Festival 2020 zu lenken, die Lücke des diesjährigen Festivals zu thematisieren und die Tradition einer wichtigen Institution für Nachwuchsförderung fortzuführen. Zeitzeug(chen) ist ein Auftakt, ein Teaser oder aber auch ein Versprechen an alle Liebhaber*innen. Am 15. November findet eine eintägige Veranstaltung statt, die gemeinsam mit dem Festival 2020 unter dem Motto „Apparat“ steht. Eine Performance von Li Lorian wurde hierfür eingeladen. Ein Countdown wird die Veranstaltung begleiten, um die Veröffentlichung des Open Calls gebührend anzukündigen. Abschließend wird das DJ-Duo aua&angst allen Besucher*innen mächtig einheizen und die Vorfreude auf das Zeitzeug_Festival 2020 steigt!

Only If I Have Nothing To Cite, I Dance

The work deals with the ways our bodies are part of oppressive realities and the possibility of choreography to propose political subversion. It is a performance-essay, or – a performance about an essay. In a research-based process, I investigate notions of mimesis, repetition and citation, so to deal with the problem of reproducing oppressive realities over and over again, while on the other hand, attempting to find strategies for mimetic subversive acts. With this work I hope to expand what started as a theoretical endeavor in the frame of the course Thinking Choreography, towards a practical investigation on stage. Following several thinkers who treated writing as a performative action, the work blurs the border between choreography and the written word while making the process of thinking and theorizing transparent, thus enabling the audience to actively participate in the production of ideas and conceptual ties.

The title of the performance is a quote, ‘a take’ on the saying by the notable Israeli painter Yair Garbuz, who imprinted the sentence „only if I have nothing to copy, I paint“ on one of his paintings. Within the performance itself, I continue to dive into the world of ready-mades that the Israeli art and media produces, images that wander between tense conflicts and depiction of violence, to alluring beauty and poetic fantasy.

The performance Only if I Have Nothing to Cite, I Dance moves between the local and the global, between the personal and the political, between individual experiences and collective narratives. The performance follows a thread of imaginary emails written to my professor, what starts as a “dry” correspondence around the writing of a Hausarbeit, grows more and more wild and personal;

A scene of a Referat in class about the work Archive of the choreograph Arkadi Zaides, where he turns video documentation of violations of human rights into a choreography, takes the direction of an embodied presentation of violence; Using live music on stage, an electric guitar produces dream-like sounds that seem trapped in its own technique of looping. In a manner of copy-paste, playback and visual citation, the work thus uses a mix of media – text, video, still images, music and sounds – in order to push forward the influence of the archive on our experience of reality, and formulate with the capacity of all our senses an imagination for a better future. The work was commissioned by the International Performance Conference in Jerusalem, October 29-31.2019. It is a collaboration with writer and musician Michal Sapir, lead singer of the band Afor Gashum.
